Hiring a Freelance Writer- Where to Look

H

Can a great writer be an asset to any business? Of course he or she can! Good writers can be great helpers, especially to small businesses that equate time and money to the survival of their business.

There are a number of situations in which you might need a writer. Some of these would include if you are not a good writer, if you need a technical writer to do a specific job, or if you are too busy to write. If any of these circumstances apply to you, then these guidelines will help you find a qualified writer.

Tip 1: Seek recommendations from friends.

If you happen to know someone who has used the services of a writer in the past, then ask them to refer you to said writer. Because of their past experience, they can tell you what they like about the writing or the person who writes for them. You will also get to benefit from their experience without having to risk a significant amount of time or money.

Tip 2: Browse your Internet.

Everything seems to be searchable and many types of information are very accessible online. Plug your search phrase into various search engines and look for a freelance writer whom you like. You can find a freelance writer by entering a general search term like “freelance writer,” or you can be more specific by entering a more specific term like “sales page freelance writer.” Peruse the search results until you find potential writers you want to contact.

Tip 3: Go to a Job Site.

There are many writers of various specialties available today. Many have accounts on job boards in order to find projects to work on. Popular, quality sites that cater to these writing specialists include elance.com, oDesk.com and guru.com. Small businesses can also create accounts on these sites to advertise their open positions and projects.

Freelance writers then bid on the projects and the businesses receive bids that allow them to look at the applicants’ profiles before making a choice based on the feedback for each writer, writing specialty and experience. Then you may contact the freelance writer that you like. The great thing about this is that you can choose from several writers at once and be able to really gauge different writing styles and what would work the best for you.

You might think “cheap” freelance writers are those with cheaper hourly or contract prices, but this is not always the case. You can find quality writers for inexpensive rates, just as you can find lousy writers who charge outrageous prices. Additionally, experienced writers who are new to freelancing often offer lower rates to attract clients and build their business.

It is therefore prudent to request a sample from a freelance writer before deciding to hire him for a project so you can assess his skills. Most writers are happy to provide one, and said sample will give you an extreme amount of information.
