Self-Employed: Do You Have What It Takes?

S

Sure, self-employment sounds glamorous. You envision working for yourself, ditching the grind of a J.O.B., making oodles of cash, and doing it all in just one day a week!  But the reality isn’t quite so glamorous, nor is it achieved in working just one day a week.  At least not when you start out at any rate!  Unless you’ve had a different experience than me?  If so do share! 🙂

The reality is that being self-employed really takes a special kind of person.  It takes someone who is dedicated, motivated, and disciplined or is at least is all three of those things the majority of the time.

I’m not one to preach, I have my own unmotivated, undisciplined, and undedicated days… but the majority of my time is spent exercising all three of those key traits and then some.

Personally, I feel that being self-employed is damn hard work. But for me, doing hard work I love, versus the hard work I hated is an acceptable trade-off.  I’m OK with that!  I get to work from the comfort of my home, my bills are (usually) paid on time, my kids have the things they need and I am free to schedule my days the way I like.

If I feel like working at 3 in the morning; I get to work at 3 in the morning.  If I want to goof off one Friday… I get to goof off one Friday.   If I want to break and have lunch with a friend, guess what? I break and have lunch with a friend! (Bet you didn’t see that one coming.)

But in order for me to work for myself, I have to put in some pretty long hours at times.  Sometimes I feel like I am always working.  Luckily it doesn’t really feel like ‘work’ for me, so I can’t complain too much!

That being said, I want to know if you feel YOU have what it takes to be self-employed. Maybe you already are, I don’t know.  Maybe you just aspire to be.  Maybe you’re self-employed but struggling and wondering if you made a mistake.  I’d love to hear your own experiences in the comments section below.

In the mean time, there are a handful of traits it’s widely recognized that folks who are self-employed share in common.  We’ll get to those in the next post- 8 Traits of Successful Entrepreneurs.
